Reliability Eng Lubrication SME

Purpose: This Individual Contributor position will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) providing technical assistance to the global manufacturing facilities in the area of mechanical and other rotating equipment, with an emphasis on Lubrication, Bearings, Hydraulics and associated systems and components.  The qualified individual will have the skills and knowledge to oversee and evaluate operation and maintenance practices regarding various types of mechanical and rotating equipment utilized in the Pulp and Paper Industry, with a specific emphasis on lubrication requirements and hydraulic systems.  The successful candidate must be able to evaluate, manage and mitigate risk as well as formulate action plans to address equipment        operating or maintenance improvement opportunities.  The goal for this position is to improve and sustain the reliability of IP's operating units by systematically reducing process and equipment failures with minimal maintenance costs.  Key activities required for success in this position will include providing training, consultation, and "hands on" technical assistance via establishing working relationships with and between facility personnel, along with external technical resources and suppliers.   Key Accountabilities: Mechanical Equipment Technical Support -- Provide technical support to global manufacturing facilities to improve reliability of process equipment.  This will include issues typically associated with rotating mechanical equipment, with a special emphasis on ensuring proper selection and use of lubricants and associated lubrication systems.  Proper execution of Lubrication Program management, with improvement, is key.  Support for complex hydraulic systems will also be a routine responsibility to ensure proper operation and maintenance of these systems. Lubrication and Hydraulics Asset Management -- Track and analyze the reliability, maintenance, and operating data for process equipment to identify improvement opportunities, prevent failures and reduce maintenance costs.  This can include conducting field surveys, reliability assessments, and in-depth interviews with stakeholders to identify strengths and weaknesses within a facility's equipment selection, installation, operation and repair plans.  Data sources also include Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CCMS, such as SAP-PM) and Field Acquisition Devices (such as DMSI handhelds).  Develop recommendations for improvement and assist operating units to implement change.  The SME will provide ownership of the Lubrication Global Manufacturing System (GMS) sub-element.  Key metrics for this sub-element are lubrication quality and lubricant consumption.  Provide Outage Support -- Provide support to the mill champions during planned and unplanned outages to include both engineering support and practical application experience via on site visits and/or from remote locations via telephone and email communications in cases of schedule conflicts. Project Reliability/Capital Effectiveness -- Work with facility and corporate team members to achieve the best possible equipment choices on new and reconfigured facility processes by aggressively applying reliability life cycle knowledge, as well as Corporate Engineering and Global Sourcing standards.  Provide technical expertise to specific projects by reviewing equipment specifications, approving Capital Investment Proposals (CIPs), monitoring equipment fabrication (Factory Acceptance Tests), supporting quality control of equipment installation and supporting equipment commissioning.  The SME will work with the facility to ensure proper lubrication plans are in place, using the facility's Manufacturing Work Systems.  These responsibilities exist for both lubrication systems and hydraulic systems projects.  Cost and Product Quality Control -- Provide support to Global Sourcing to obtain value-added contracts with suppliers of lubricants, lubrication systems and hydraulic systems.  Ensure that product quality standards are maintained.  Transfer of Knowledge -- Provide effective detailed "hands on" technical training, where delivery is as important as the information being presented.  The individual must be respected as an SME and as a good teacher.  Training skills must include ability to provide one-on-one and group (small and large) training in classrooms and in field settings.  Communication skills must be good for all levels of the facility organization.  Networking and Team Building -- Provide ongoing mentoring and leadership within the COE to ensure continuing viability of core Reliability technology.  Provide personal consulting and interaction that creates an environment of team work and cooperation.  Facilitate the implementation of standards and best practices by creating effective networks between different manufacturing location champions and Technology personnel, including the Process Technology and Capital teams. Reliability Practices Development -- Identify new equipment, products and technologies for improved reliability in IP. Reliability Best Practices (Standards) Development and Validation -- Partner with operating unit teams and outside resources (where applicable) to develop equipment and systems procurement standards that are based on sound engineering principles and validated performance data.  Work with facilities in the application of best practices and engineering standards to ensure asset performance and to minimize maintenance cost. Root Cause Failure Analysis and Chronic Problem Resolution and Failure Assistance -- Provide assistance to facilities in analyzing the causes of equipment failures and helping them solve chronic problems.  Assist them in the analysis of root causes and development of corrective action plans.  Provide expertise and assistance for investigating and addressing failures exceeding mill technical capabilities on an as-needed basis.  Key Challenges: Diminishing level of experience in the Mill organizations Development and utilization of mill champions to perform as a team to help each other Increase the corporation's understanding of Lubrication and Hydraulics issues Increase the reliability of the process equipment without increasing the maintenance costs.  Reduce Unscheduled Downtime resulting from equipment failures attributable to Lubrication, Hydraulics or associated repair practices. Establish credibility as a subject matter expert for Lubrication and Hydraulics in the corporation Keep International Paper ahead of our competition's capability for Reliability of Lubrication and Hydraulic systems. Influence mill personnel to uphold optimum maintenance discipline for Lubrication and Hydraulics in spite of having lower than desired manpower and resources This position will impact the Reliability of equipment and operating processes within the Pulp and Paper Manufacturing Organization by providing technical expertise to reduce process failures and maintenance costs.   The position also provides strategic guidance on project development and implementation by identifying effective life cycle cost strategies and technologies to achieve project objectives.  The position interacts with mill and staff organizations both domestically and internationally to achieve the profitability and reliability goals of each unique operating unit.  Knowledge and Experience: The ideal candidate requires a mechanical engineering (or similar) degree and 5 to 15 years of combined maintenance and engineering experience in the fields of rotating equipment reliability, lubrication and hydraulics.  Experience in the Pulp and Paper Industry is desired.  Knowledge of process equipment design, construction and operation is important.  A thorough knowledge of various types of mechanical power transmission components, bearings and lubricants is essential.  In addition, the candidate must have leadership skills and abilities which enable him/her to motivate and influence both exempt and nonexempt team members with widely varying knowledge and experience levels.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills plus the demonstrated ability to interact with team members at all levels of the organization is also a must.  Expertise in reliability systems, Root Cause Failure Analysis, Predictive Maintenance techniques, Computerized Maintenance Management System usage, and process knowledge is a plus.  Certification by nationally recognized groups in areas such as Lubrication Technology, Maintenance and Reliability management, etc. should already be possessed by the candidate or achievable within a reasonable period of time. Organizational Relationship: This position is part of the IP Global Manufacturing Technology Reliability Center of Excellence, which is led by the COE Director of Reliability who reports to the Vice-President of Global Technology.  This position will report to the Manager of the Materials, Mechanical and Facilities Reliability Team within the Reliability COE.  This position will have a PL of 11 to 17, based on the qualifications the candidate brings to the table.  A developmental role at the low end of the range will be considered.  Comments: This role requires extensive travel, both domestic and international, approximately 80% of the time, and a willingness to provide assistance 24/7 to manufacturing facilities.     PL14-PL17
